Wow - the class got more than we bargained for when one of the cows at the dairy went into labor, allowing us to witness the birth of a calf. Leroy Shatto, one of the owners, said they will name the new edition to Shatto "Avila" Welcome to the world Avila.
Here's a great photo from Tina of the mom and her newborn calf.
It was so cool to see this! I was able to milk a cow and see a calf born! Very fun day--worth the long bus ride:)
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to see the calf's legs sticking out of the mother when she walked around, so I thought it would come out like that. I didn't really know how cows gave birth, but it was interesting to see. I agree that it was definitely a good trip.

The trip to Shatto dairy was by far the highlight of this class thus far for me. I enjoyed the tour and especially listening to Mr. Shatto tell his story. I like seeing good people succeed and this family and workers seem like really good people. The trip wasn't as bad as I thought it would be either :).
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the trip to Shatto way more than I thought I would. Who would have imagined that we would get to see a calf being born! What a delicate and awesome thing to experience. This made my day! The tastings of the milks and the other cheeses and butter was awesome! I especially enjoyed Mr. Shatto. He was so very authentic and entertaining. It is sad to think that none of his children want to carry on Shatto. I know it is HARD work but also such a reward to know that you have a high quality product that SOOO many people truly enjoy. They are truly admired by me and I LOVE their products!
ReplyDeleteI love milk, sometimes i walk around with a milk moustache just being cool. I can't believe how small the dairy was but yet how much milk they process per day.
ReplyDeleteWelcome Avila! What a great trip! I will have to see about going their again with my girls. It will be a good Girl Scout trip!
ReplyDeleteSomehow I missed hearing them say they planned to name the cow Avila. How neat! I really enjoyed the trip to the Shatto dairy farm and seeing the calf born was definitely a highlight.
