Korean BBQ at Chosun BBQ

Cooking thinly sliced marinated meat on a grill table.

Many small side dishes to eat with rice and BBQ
The class went to Chosen BBQ restaurant to sample Korean BBQ and Bibimbop for the vegetarians in the class.  You cook the meat at your table on a grill, then cut the meat into small pieces with scissors.  You can eat the meat by itself or wrap it in lettuce leaves with sauce or small portions of the various side dishes. We also sampled a soybean soup.

  1. I really enjoyed the set up of the tables where you can cook your own meats and make your concotion of the various side dishes. There was more than enough food to go around. My favorite was the meats and the sauce that came with the salad. I asked for more of this sauce and used it for my rice and some of the vegetables to make them taste sweet, spicy and tangy. Umm, yummy!

    1. I agree Margie, I liked pretty much everything as well! I too loved the sauce with the salad, one of my favorite flavors for sure! I also mixed my rice with some sauces and some of the egg soup that was delicious! :)

    3. It's great to hear that everyone enjoyed the meats! Unfortunately, I can't say the same, but I did enjoy the salad as well! The meats did smell very flavorful, so I can only imagine how wonderful they tasted. Sadly to say, I preferred the appetizer salad than the bowl of Bibimbop that I got; the dressing was too powerful for my taste. I did find out later that my rice was supposed to be mixed in with it, so I wonder if that would have changed my opinion...?

    4. I think that if you mixed the rice with it, it would have given it a lot better flavor and/or texture!

    5. Margie - I loved the salad dressing too! It's very similar to a Japanese house dressing, like they serve at GoJo's - one of my favorites!

    6. That sounds good. I have always wondered about that place - GoJo's on Broadway??

    7. The salad dressing was very tasty! Hmm, GoJo's? Will have to try that...

    8. Summar - I wish I had known that you didn't know about the sauce! The sauce that is used though is something that you might still have not liked it mixed in with the rice.

Don't go to GoJo's.. Go to Stix at the Legends ;)
haha.. Sorry gotta promote where I work! But if anyone wants to drive out there, I can serve you guys and give a discount too.

  2. Although I don't eat seafood, I really like the bbq'd meat. I think this type of bbq encourages family and friends get togethers and gives people something to talk about. I wasn't sure how I would feel about the double dipping of food, but I realized I work in the health care industry and I am going to be exposed to a lot more things in a hospital that sharing with (hopefully) healthy adults over a meal. I think it was also very enjoyable to talk to the guy in Korea, it really added to our experience in the class.

    3. I agree as well. I was glad that he was able to speak English so well, it made it easier for us to understand the things he was talking about. Also I thought that his little side jokes were hilarious

  3. I really liked how there were several small portions of different dishes. I enjoyed the variety, as compared to an American dish meal of meat, one vegetable, one starch, and a bread. And being able to play with your food is always fun. I liked that I could choose how crisp or not my meat was cooked, instead of relying on someone else interpretation of what medium or rare is.

    1. I never thought about it from John's perspective - that you can cook to your own taste. I do like mixing all the side dishes with my meat and wrapping it up in lettuce .

    2. John! That is absolutely correct! I really appreciated the fact that I could have my meat extremely cooked, just how I wanted it, as opposed to waiting to receive my plate from the back with the possibility that it won't be cooked enough. I am very picky about how meat is cooked because I always worry that I'm going to get sick, so it was nice to be able to watch the entire cooking process and know that it was exactly what I wanted!

    3. I always enjoy cooking out and in theory the smaller dishes would have been fun, if I could have eaten them. I tried everything, but nothing was so good that I wanted to have more, actually quite the opposite. The meat was also extremely fatty and not high quality, but this could have been the particular restaurant or perhaps that is the Korean way? I was not overly impressed with the restaurant overall unfortunately, as both the facility and the food left a bad taste in my mouth.

    4. Your right, the restaurant didn't impress me much either, decidedly lacking in adequate management. Having worked in restaurants for a couple decades I can say much of the problems you describe are because of the lack of management. It really felt like a Mom & Pop kind of place. Too bad, I can see alot of potential in a place like that.

    5. I agreed with all of you!! The food was interesting in how it was served in order to provide us all with a nice opportunity to sample items. I loved the tofu. I think I had it cooked a few different ways. The meat, to me, was the same as any other meat. I didn't really have any feelings towards it one way or another. I can definitely agree that the experience was lacking due to the lack of staff and I didn't feel as though there was any interest in doing more than getting food on the table and then us out the door.

    6. Brian- I agree with your comments. I did not care for any of the side dishes as I tyipcally do not eat vegetables. The sauce that was on the kimchi was too sour and also left a bad taste in my mouth. I also agree that the meat was very fatty. I did, however, think that the meat tasted good. I liked the seasoning on the pork.

  4. I was glad to experience the Korean restaurant, but I don't think I will be heading back anytime soon. It seemed to me that everything kind of had the same flavor. Kimchi was interesting but I couldn't finish it. The meats were good and definitely showed a big difference in Korean BBQ and American BBQ, I consider it grilling really, but the meat with rice wrapped up inside was more filling than I would have thought. -Chad

    1. I did not care for the food at all except the rice and salad. Although I am a meat/potatoe guy the meat to me seemed very tough.

    2. Chad, being a major fan of American BBQ I have to agree that there was a huge difference. You are right. It was just grilling. I probably won't go back again. I was looking forward to being bowled over by the food because my brother raved about the food after having spent a year in Korea. But, I didn't see it as anything that amazing. May he had had way too much Soju while there!

    3. Humm - maybe that's what we needed, Susan, some Soju!!

  5. I really enjoyed the Korean bbq and whole experience with other classmates and all. It was something truly social as well, which I find always to be a great time! I had been to this restaurant as well as another Korean restaurant before. I have a good friend who is from KC but now lives with her family in San Diego who is Korean and introduced me to the cuisine. I had even had the amazing opportunity to share a meal with her, her family, husband, children, and their parents...a tradition Korean meal that was something I will always remember. The hospitality is really something I appreciate...the kindness her family had shown to us. It does seem that there is something for everyone at the Korean bbq! Had a great time with all of you! My favorite thing I ate was the lettuce wraps and kimchi. :)

  6. I absolutely love trying new foods and will always try something at least once, but yesterday's experience at Chosun was an exception to my norm. After trying the fermented radish, my palate was completely off the rest of the meal and nothing tasted quite right afterwards, which is unfortunate. In fact, later that night my wife made some of her awesome homemade salsa and I could not eat it because the garlic made my stomach turn over; it reminded me too much of our lunch. I agree that it was fun eating and mingling with so many friends and classmates, but the food definitely left something to be desired from my perspective. Perhaps I should give Korean food another chance, but at a different establishment?

    1. Or Brian perhaps some different Korean dishes. There are a wide variety of foods besides the BBQ.

  7. I thought that the meat was very tender and full of flavor. Also the dressing on the salad I thought was really tasty. I did not care much for the other side dishes, but I am glad we got to experience their culture to an extent!

  8. At the time I did enjoy the different dishes and chatting with classmates, but for the evening and next day the food didn't sit so well at all. I would definately give korean food another chance, but would like to try a different resteraunt. I appreciate trying new and different things and have enjoyed that aspect of this class.

    1. Shari - I had the same problem with an upset stomach that night... I think it was probably the kimchi that was the culprit. It tasted great at the time, but I think because all of the stuff was so different from my normal meals, it threw my gut all out of whack. I'm with you, I'll give it another shot, but maybe just take it easy on the kimchi.

    2. The meat tasted yummy at the time, but I did feel greasy after we left, inside and out. I thought it was just from me cooking that I felt that way. I've had Korean food many times before, this wasn't the best, but the price was probably right. I went to Korea and Japan in the 80's. I must admit that I loved Japanese food much more than Korean, especially the smoked eel and Udon noodle soup. But I like being adventurous with food like you, Shari.

    3. My stomach too was not very happy. I think it was the spices and the wide variety of foods I ate at one sitting. Plus i always seem so stuffed after we have these lunches. My clothes smelled so gross from being right in front of the grill! I had to wash those ASAP

  9. I have eaten Korean Barbecue before, but not in this type of environment. I thought the cooking the meat at the table made for a really fun twist. I tried everything, and enjoyed most of it, but the kimchi was probably my favorite. It was quite a bit different than what I am used to, but it went really well in a lettuce wrap with the meat and whatever the green stuff was. I probably ate a little bit too much of it, though... I don't think my stomach is accustomed to that much cabbage and spice at once. Overall, I really enjoyed the idea of it, and the dishes, along with the way the meal invites you to be social and share with the people at your table.

I have to add, while I think this is a great concept for a restaurant, and now I want to try others for sure, this restaurant was kind of poorly run. I felt bad for our server, since she obviously didn't have much help, and it was very hard for her to keep up. I think if you do this again in a future class, perhaps a different restaurant may be better managed.

  10. That was pretty darn fun. I'm glad I got to cook. That's my favorite thing to do in life (besides you know what). The meat was yummy. Not sure about the other stuff, though. I only had the fish cakes and tofu, since I was busy cooking. I just want to know where the picture of my big fire is. JK.
The waitresses were trying so hard. Our big group seemed a little overwhelming for them. It all worked out fine and dandy.
I like our group. It was great getting to know you.

    1. Yes, Catherine, I agree that we had a great group. Despite differences in what types of food people like, everyone was so open to trying new things from the Ethiopian to the Korean food, as well as traveling to a dairy farm. I was very impressed with the great attitudes.

  12. The experience at the Korean BBQ was very good, the food was great (what I was willing to try) I did try most all, at least once, glad we were able to cook at the table though. The meat was tasty, hope Eric's dog(s) enjoyed the bones =}
This was a good class and I really enjoyed the variety we were able to try.
Thank you all for keeping it enjoyable!

  13. The Korean restaurant was not bad. I liked the beef and pork with the kimchi and the rice, but I did not like all the sides. I pretty much stuck to those three things. I think there were too many sides for a meal, which makes it tough to eat. Having too many varieties takes away what is special about a set meal that has only the special things you like. Other than that, what I chose were pretty good. We had good cooks at our table.

  14. My first impression of the resturant was very positive, but the food to me was not to my taste. In my travels I have tasted foods from many other countries, this type of food is not my best. I do like the self serve idea, it is kind of a cross between a japanese steakhouse and fondu resturants.

  16. It was interesting to go eat at Chosun as part of the class since I am Korean and I had been there before. It was fun for me to explain some stuff to the people that sat around me. Overall, it seemed like most of the class did not really enjoy the side dishes as much which was understandable to me because Korean food is a little different. A lot of the side dishes that were served were not the choices I would have put out for people that have never really had Korean food. I was a little disappointed to hear that a lot of the class would probably not go back since they only had one aspect of Korean food. I've always thought of other Asian cultures to have more 'interesting' type of looking food items but after hearing comments from classmates, I rethought that idea. Overall, I am glad that people were very open to trying the food though!

  17. I think Chosun was ok. I don't like small saucers or bowls for rice because we do not eat like that in my culture. Everything has to be an adequate medium sized bowl or plate to large. I had to keep asking for rice, so my appetite had to wait at times. I liked the rice and meat though. It was fun grilling with others and we enjoyed it! It's nice to experience other Asian food cultures to see how different they are from mine. ~Michelle

  18. I thought that Chosun was good and I liked being able to have the experience of Korean BBQ. I was shocked by how much food we were served because after we were done eating I could hardly move I was so full.
