Trying Korean food

At Sobahn restaurant sampling some tasty Korean food.

  1. After our first experience at the Blue Nile, I had high expectations for Sobahn and it definitely did not disappoint! I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and the food. It helps that I am pretty open and I enjoy new experiences. I was fortunate enough to sit with Steve so he was able to explain exactly what everything was and tell me how everything compared to what he is used to in Korea. My four favorite dishes would have to be the spicy chicken (dak galbi), the bulgogi, the veggie pancakes (pajun), and the bibimbap. I was also able to try the soju and it tasted way better than how it smelled. Even though we each had out own plates, it did seem to have a communal feel to it as well and I enjoyed being able to share in conversation and food with others. I am pretty sure I became an expert on using chopsticks!

  2. I had a really great experience at Sobahn. I really have trouble trying new foods because I do not really prefer spicy foods, and I'm also not a seafood-eater. With that being said, I was hesitant to try Korean food, because I knew that a good majority of these foods fall under at least on of those categories. However, Sobahn offered many varieties of food, for picky-eaters like me, that I was eager to try.
My favorite dish was the bulgogi. It had a very unique, sweet flavor. It went well with the sticky white rice we were served. From all of the variety of food we received tonight, I would definitely order the bulgogi the next time I visit. Along with enjoying that dish, I also really enjoyed the veggie pancakes, rice, and various vegetables. Additionally, the people that sat with me very much enjoyed the fish and spicy food that was served.
Tonight was a fun time trying some new things. The whole time I kept thinking about how much I wanted to try to find a recipe for the veggie pancakes to make at home! Overall, Sobahn is a great restaurant with delicious food, very nice decor, and a wonderful wait staff.

  3. I had a really good time at Sobahn and would definitely be going there again. I wasn't afraid to try anything on the table which I am glad I wasn't because everything was really good. I really enjoyed all of the main and side dishes on the table. I think my two favorite dishes on the table were the veggie pancakes (pajun) and the bibimbap. I also liked the set up the dishes on the table. Everyone was passing around the dishes and sharing their feelings about the food when they tried them. Overall I had a great time at Sobahn and plan on going their in the future.

  4. I am always excited to try something new, in this case it was Korean food. I was pretty sure I would enjoy our dinner at Sobahn, but did not expect to love it so much. I tried everything on the table and thought it was all unique and delicious. My favorite dishes included the pajun, bulgogi, and bibimbap. Again, I noticed they served the food "family style" where everyone shared one dish and I like that because it really pushes everyone at the table to interact. I'm excited to add Sobahn to my list of restaurants I want my friends and family to try!

  5. My experience at Sobahn Korean restaurant was overall very good. I felt like the place was relaxing and the atmosphere was welcoming and inviting. It was very clean and not too many decorations everywhere. We had the chance to try 6 or 5 different dishes. This was a great way to experience a variety of things I would never know to order. The dishes were many different colors and textures with one of them being spicy a little bit. This reminded me of a dish we make in Saudi Arabia that has some hot peppers in it so it was interesting to see our two cultures share the same flavor on some level. I tried everything and some things I liked more than others. The beef was amazing and more flavorful than any way I have had it prepared before. However, there was a pasta like cake dish I thought was horrible. Overall it was great exposure to food I never would have had the chance to try otherwise.

  6. The Sobahn restaurant visit was a great learning experience for me. Not only did I learn a lot of new things about the Korean culture but I also learned a lot about myself during the experience.
Just by looking at the food when the server set the side dishes on the table, I couldn't tell how some of the sides were going to taste. Although they were all very colorful, I thought maybe some of them would taste bland. Interestingly enough, I found out that almost all of the dishes were actually very flavorful and some had a spicy taste. One side that was most surprising to me was the kimchi. It tasted a lot different than I had expected. To me, it reminded me of a spicy version of sauerkraut. I found the kimchi to be both sweet and spicy, which I thought tasted very good. Besides the kimchi, I really liked the spicy chicken and veggies and the bulgogi. The beef in the bulgogi was sweet tasting to me, which I really enjoyed, even though it was not what I had imagined it to taste like.
Of all of them, the only side that I didn’t care for were the rice cakes. However, the texture of the rice cakes was very interesting to me. I was expecting them to taste like noodles, but I was very surprised at how chewy they actually were. I also thought the sauce was a little too spicy for me. In fact, I couldn’t believe it when Dotty said in Korea the sauce is actually even a lot spicier than what we tried. However, although I didn’t care for that dish, I am still very glad I tried it since it is a popular dish in the Korean culture.
Another thing I took away from this restaurant visit was, at the beginning of the experience, I was unsure about trying to use the chopsticks. I didn't think I would be coordinated enough to actually be able to use them to eat with. However, I made sure that before I immediately went to use a spoon, I at least had given the chopsticks a try. I had never attempted to use them before, but after getting some guidance and not giving up on myself, by the end of the experience, I had started to get the hang of them pretty well.
Overall, I enjoyed this restaurant visit a lot. I am glad I got to experience and accept the differences between our culture and the Korean culture.

  7. Overall, I had a great experience at Sobahn Korean restaurant. I will admit I was skeptical if I would like the food, but I had an open mind and tried most all of the food served. I enjoyed the Bibimbap which had a variety of food items served over rice. I also enjoyed the broccoli, spicy chicken, and veggie pancakes. I was hesitant to try the veggie pancakes, simply because of them being called veggie pancakes. It turns out this was the thing I enjoyed most. I ended up liking the texture of this fried dish, probably because it was the most American dish we were served. I also love rice and like that we were served a side dish of rice that I was able to pair with all of the others foods. I had the pleasure of sitting with Eric, and he was able to tell us more about the Koran foods we were served. It was great speaking with him about his experiences and talking about the foods we liked most. I will say I was very proud of myself for using chopsticks the whole evening. I have never eaten with chopsticks before but felt that I caught on quickly and was able to eat my whole meal using them. I was also able the try soju, which tasted better than I thought. I was hesitant because I was told it tasted like Vodka, which I do not like. But after trying it, it wasn’t as strong as Vodka and more tolerable to drink that I expected. I have learned a lot about myself through the experiences we have had as a class at trying foods from different cultures. I have surprised myself with the amount of foods I have been willing to try. I felt I have stepped out of my comfort zone and tried new types of foods that I have enjoyed. Not only did I enjoy the food at Sobahn, but I also enjoyed getting to experience this with my classmates.

  8. I really enjoyed the experience of eating at Sobahn Korean restaurant. Although I enjoy the typical American Chinese, I have never tried Korean before, and it was definitely a different taste! I think my favorite dish is a tie between the veggie pancakes and the Bibimbap...although the beef dish was up there too. I am also proud to say that I became confident in using chopsticks to eat by the end of the meal (a skill I had not yet mastered). I am thankful this class is making me step out of my comfort zone of foods, and making me experience new cuisines, which I have yet to dislike! It is teaching me to become more adventurous. It was a wonderful experience, and I cannot wait for the next one!

  9. I enjoyed my experience at Sobahn. I was able to sit and chat with some nursing students who I rarely see which was nice and we all had some good laughs as we tried the foods and found that some were much to spicy for our palates. I learned about myself 2 things, that I am extremely terrible with chopsticks and I don't handle spicy foods as well as I thought I did. My favorite dishes were the bulgogi (the sweet beef dish), and the panjun (the veggie pancake). Overall I really enjoyed myself and I am really enjoying learning about other cultures food and other cultures in general, it gives me the feel of traveling to other countries without having to spend tons of money to do so.

  10. I always enjoy trying new things, especially food. I was quite excited to eat at Sobahn. The only Korean food that I have had previously is Korean BBQ. I was especially excited to try the kimchi. One of my Korean friends would always eat kimchi for breakfast. Kimchi has a very...unique, smell. It was very spicy, much spicier than I expected, but I really liked the taste! I think I liked the fish cakes the most. I really liked the spongy texture, similar to the little rice cakes that we ate in class. I also had the pleasure of trying Soju, an alcoholic beverage similar to vodka. Unfortunately, they only have the Japanese version, not the Korean one. Either way, I thought it tasted pretty good. I really like drinking beer and am not a huge fan of taking shots, but the Soju was very bearable and enjoyable to drink.

  11. I really enjoyed my experience at Sobahn. I am a very picking eater so at first I was a little unsure. It was my first time eating Korean food as well, however I must say that it was really good. The dish I liked the most was Bibimbap, which I found a surprise because when it was discussed in class I was pretty sure I was not going to like it at all. The beef was really good as well which was surprising because I never eat beef, but it was cooked and seasoned perfectly. I also had the opportunity to sit at the table with Steve so he was able to talk about all the dishes which I was very grateful for. I really enjoy that this class takes me out of my comfort zone and I enjoy learning about and experiencing different cultures through their food. I cannot wait for the next restaurant.

  12. I am a huge fan of Asian cuisine, however this was my first experience with specifically Korean dinning. I was very excited to get in and try the variety of new foods that we had discussed in class. I always enjoy the chance to eat with chopsticks, and using the metal ones provided at the restaurant was very interesting as it was my first time and I learned I definitely prefer them to their wood counter parts! The bulgogi was what I expected to be my favorite dish, and it definitely did not disappoint. However, what ended up being my favorite dish was the one that I was the most apprehensive about coming in, that being the rice cakes in the spicy savory chili sauce. I really liked the firm and dense texture of the cake its self and, being the chili loving New Mexican that I am, I truly loved the taste of the chili that the cake was served in! It made me think of posole from back home! I found it very interesting that the flavor profiles we so similar in what are very different cultures and cuisines! The kimchi was also a bit scary in thought and smell but was actually quite enjoyable. Another surprise favorite of mine was the fish noodle that was served cold again a texture and flavour that I found very pleasing yet the coolness of the dish certainly threw me off at first. The food experience was better than what I thought it would be and I had high hopes coming in! The best part of the meal in my opinion though was the way the food was served and the atmosphere it created. The veritable plethora of options served on communal plates that required full table cooperation to serve and share was awesome! I enjoyed my table time with Madison, Kyle, and Victoria very much as we covered an expanse of topics while enjoying the meal and good laughs! Overall I had high expectations coming in and they were all met and exceeded both in company and the meal itself!

  13. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the dish with the simi uncocked egg needed to be stirred into the scorching ceramic bowl with all the cooking contents; however, I would absolutely eat that again. Each dish was incredibly surprising. Whether cold, spicey, fishy, or simply delicious I truly enjoyed gambling with my the grip of my chopsticks. It is pretty obvious I loved the food.

The best part about the ways we eat food is the company we keep. I sat at a table with fellow students I really knew nothing about at the start of the meal. Meeting new people can be fun, quirky, and slightly awkward. When you add food to that combo people let their guard down, open up, and can share an experience of liking or hating a bite. I love new. New foods, new stories, new people. Love it.

  14. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to try any of the delicious looking food due to an illness. But from the looks of everything, it looked delicious and colorful. My table mates definitely kept me updated on what they enjoyed and what wasn't pleasing. The beef seemed to be the tables favorite. I loved that they put the side dishes out in the middle, it was like a buffet per table. Very colorful. When I am better, I plan on returning and being able to try it for myself. One thing I did notice when I ordered a soda, they brought it out in an actual soda can rather than in a glass. Though that was odd. Overall, the rice was delicious and I am looking forward to when I can actually go back and try it.

  15. As a Chinese who have tried Korea food so many times before, I didn't experience as much surprises as I did the last time when I tried Ethiopian food.We even have similar "Chinese Kimchi" that are much spicier in my country too, so I definitely enjoyed the Kimchi at the table. The only surprise was that one side dish which I loved and always thought it was tofu turned out it was fish cake (taste very similar but I guess fish cake is more chewy than tofu).
Sobahn overall is a really good Korean restaurant that gives us a general idea about how Korean cuisines look like. I might be picky, but I personally enjoy Korean BBQ much more than the ones we had in Sobahn. Maybe because I watched tons of Korean TV and reality show, Korean BBQ makes me feel it's the choice when friends get together and hang out. Of course, that's just how I feel about Korean dishes. :)

  16. In my life, I have never tried Korean food or anything similar to Korean food. I was skeptical in the beginning because every dish on the table looked different than anything I have ever eaten. Regardless, in the end I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed every dish that I tried. There was no dish on the table that I did not put on my plate multiple times. My favorites were the veggie pancakes and the bowl of rice topped with beef, veggies, and an egg. Another thing that I tried that was different is that I ate majority of my meal with chopsticks. This was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be! It was fun to try to eat with chopsticks, but I think I am going to stick with spoons and forks. Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Sobahn and I will probably go back! I learned that maybe I am not as picky as I thought I was. I look forward to trying all different kinds of food from here on out!

  17. This experience was different from the Ethiopian restaurant by a mile. I was nervous to try this Korean food because I had never had Korean food in my life and after the first restaurant experience of trying new food it make me more nervous. I was completely surprised when I ended up really liking some dishes and found my self eating more and more of it. The marinated steak was my favorite meal of the night and would go back to eat that again. Another dish I really liked and ate a lot of was the bibimnap. I would go back to Sobahn again for those two dishes and talked about going back with a friend because it was so good I want them to try it. Trying new food is fun when I end up really liking the food. I learned that I need to be more open to trying to food because who knows, I might end up really liking it. I did not however succeed at using chopsticks, that is something I will have to work on. Overall, I am thankful for this experience and really enjoyed it and will go back.

  18. I really enjoyed my experience at Sobahn. I never really knew that I could enjoy Korean food as much as I did! I'm always timid or scared to step out of my comfort zone and try new things, but I really enjoyed all the different food we had at Sobahn. I'm not a huge fan of spicy foods, but I will always at least try any food that is presented in front of me, so I had a taste of everything on the table. By far my favorite food there was the vegetable pancake, the rice, and the beef that was marinated. Absolutely delicious! The spicy chicken wasn't my favorite, but I enjoyed mixing the egg in with the other food in the ceramic bowl. The setting at the table was very engaging, allowed for easy conversation. I had a hard time with the chopsticks and found myself relying on the spoon for assistance. I think I put soy sauce on everything I ate, for me that just enhances the flavor! Overall I had a great experience and I look forward to trying new foods in the future! I do plan on going back to Sobahn and telling my friends of the great experience I had.

  19. I really enjoyed my experience at the Korean restaurant. I tried everything and enjoyed most of the food. I had the pleasure of sitting next to Dotty just like I did at the Ethiopian restaurant. She explained every dish and the history behind it. We also sat with Lacey's three year old son Grant. Grant was a good sport and tried everything. Him and I had similar tastes in all the foods which was pretty funny in my opinion. I think I get better and better at trying new foods, and I owe it all to this class. I am excited to try the next restaurant

  20. I have never been one to try many new things when it came to food. I have always stuck to what I know I like. After the Ethiopian restaurant I started to try new things and wasn't scared to do so. This time I tried everything but one dish and it was very good! I wasn't a complete fan of the spicy chicken but I loved the beef dish. Our table compared that dish to chicken teriyaki. The large bowl with the rice mixture was another one of my favorites. I was also impressed with the veggie pancakes. They were very good as well.
I enjoyed the little holder for our utensils, so they never laid on the table. I thought it was also very interesting how everyone got their own rice bowl. At the end of the night there was a very large group coming in to have dinner. They acted like it was a regular event that they participated in and I was very intrigued on what they did as each person arrived. The people who were already sitting at the table would stand and bow then they would all sit. I have tried to pay attention to my surroundings during the dinners we have been having to see how others act during their meals. It is pretty awesome how different everyone is with their cultures. I will probably take my family their some day because I know they would enjoy it as much as I did.

  21. Due to a stomach condition, I was unfortunately limited as to what I was allowed to sample. I pride myself in being open minded, and willing to try new cuisines. I have been exposed to Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Philippine dishes before, so I thought that I would have a decent idea as to what to expect. Sobahn was an entirely new experience for me. I sampled the 'sweet beef' and the 'veggie pancakes', neither of which were my favorites. Before mixing in the egg, and spicy sauce, I tried the carrots, sprouts, and "weeds", as Mr. Winter refers to them, of the 'cereal' rice bowl. The personal rice bowl, I thought was completely absent of any flavor.
I was fortunate enough to dine with my son, and Dotty. I enjoyed the conversation discussing the various dishes, and the comparisons to American cuisine. I was proud of G for trying everything on the table, including the spicy chicken dish. It was a bit to hot for him, so we bypassed the kimchee and the 'spicy rice cake' dishes.
Though my dinning experience was limited, I did enjoy it overall.
