Noryangjin Fish Market - A Paradise of Seafood

Noryangjin is Seoul's largest fish market. The scale of this 66,000 square meter facility is impressive. Over 700 shops offer fresh and dried fish, various shellfish, squid and octopus...both farm raised and wild caught.
We were thankful to have Daniel Gray from O'ngo Food Communications as our guide. He did a great job of shepherding us through the market and selecting a wealth of fresh seafood for us to sample for lunch.

There are several restaurants alongside the market that will prepare your fresh fish as requested.

The feast began with shashimi and sea squirt followed by chopped baby octopus, grilled mackerel, steamed snapper and fish soup.
YanDa having a tough time picking up a piece of wriggling octopus.

Happy faces, full bellies.

  1. The food was amazing and the sight of that market made me happy. I love seeing fish that fresh at the market. Something rare here in the Midwest. It was interesting seeing the way the fish marketers displayed their catch so as to attract more customers. There was so much to see that it was hard not to want to try everything. I think the best part was sitting down from a good long meal after all that walking!

    1. The fish market made me wish we had something like that in the Midwest, wouldn't that be nice! I also thought it was interesting to see te way fish marketers displayed their catch. It definitely caught my eye. I wish we could have tried everything, that would have been awesome!

  2. I had a great time at the fish market. Some of the things did give me the creeps like the little crabs crawling on each other to get out of the bin. I thought it was pretty cool how you could pick out the fish you wanted to eat that day and buy it and take it down to the restaurant and they would cook it for you. That's pretty neat because you know you are getting what you want and you know it is fresh. All the dishes they prepared for us were very delicious, dishes that I had never tried in my life. Definitely a great experience.

  3. The fish market was one of the coolest parts of the trip! It was so neat to see seafood everywhere! Fresh out of the water is definitely the way to go! I thought it was great that you could pick out the fish you wanted and have someone fillet it for you and then cook it! I was hesitant on eating the live octopus but I'm glad I did. It was actually not that bad.

    1. My respect goes out to you for trying the octopus. I was not able to do it. But at least you can say you have tried live octopus.

  4. I really liked the fish market just because I had the chance to see all the different types of fish. I had never seen an octopus before so I'm glad I was able to do that. I was surprised to see how big the fish market is. I really liked it!

  5. I think the fish market was my favorite part of the trip. I love seafood and it was unreal to see all the fresh seafood that this market had to offer. It made me want to move to Noryangjin just so I could have access to this place. My favorite dish from the restaurant at the market was the grilled mackerel! The live octopus was definitely an experience, but it really wasn't bad at all!
